Como en los últimos años, nuestro grupo se ha vuelto a movilizar para celebrar y reivindicar el papel de la mujer en la ciencia y en el apoyo a las vocaciones científicas en niñas. ¡ Y cómo no, siendo un grupo 100% femenino!

Como el año pasado acabamos tan contentas, este año todo el equipo ha participado en la iniciativa #Conócelas 2022 de ASEICA que se celebra el 8 de febrero con el mismo objetivo que el 11F, pero acercando la investigación en cáncer a las aulas: “las detectives del cáncer”. Este año la iniciativa ha contado con 235 investigadoras y más de 11000 alumnos. Nosotras hemos colaborado con en colegios e institutos de Aragón y Extremadura: CEIP Foro Romano de Cuarte de Huerva (Zaragoza), donde han hablado Alba y Patricia; IES Miralbueno (Zaragoza), donde han dado una charla presencial Bea y Marta; IES Reino Aftasí (Badajoz) donde se ha conectado Paula y el IES Carolina Coronado (Almendralejo) con Pilar. La respuesta ha sido muy buena, nos han hecho todo tipo de preguntas interesantes y ¡todos hemos disfrutado muchísimo! Además, Paula y Alba han participado en una tertulia en la Radio Comarca de Daroca, donde han explicado un poquito sus experiencias y cómo han llegado a dónde están hoy. Puedes escuchar el podcast aquí.

Y como Paula estaba lanzada, se ha conectado también con el Colegio Rural Agrupado La Sabina (Frula, Huesca) para hablar a los niños de primaria de la investigación y enseñarles el laboratorio. ¡Ha sido muy divertido y a los niños les ha encantado ver el trabajo del laboratorio en directo!

Creemos que participar en estas iniciativas es esencial para lograr una igualdad en las disciplinas STEM en el futuro, pero no podemos olvidar que el apoyo a la carrera científica en las mujeres es esencial para lograr esta igualdad… muchas de nosotras nos quedamos por el camino por falta de recursos, apoyos y debido a la precariedad de esta profesión.

Similar to previous years, our team has celebrated and claimed the role of women in science, helping to spark scientific callings in girls. Of course, being a research team 100% composed of women!

Since last year it was so fullfilling, this year all the team participated in the #Conócelas 2022 initiative from ASEICA, celebrated on February 8th with the same objective as 11F, but focused on cancer research : “the cancer detectives”. This year the initiative has involved 235 female researchers and more than 11000 students. We have collaborated in schools and high schools in Aragón and Extremadura: CEIP Foro Romano in Cuarte de Huerva (Zaragoza), with Alba y Patricia; IES Miralbueno (Zaragoza), where Bea y Marta were lucky enough to have in-person talks; IES Reino Aftasí (Badajoz) with Paula and IES Carolina Coronado (Almendralejo) with Pilar. Moreover, Paula and Alba participated in a chat in Radio Comarca de Daroca, where thay have explained their background and how they made it to our lab. You can find the link here.

And since Paula was on fire this 11F, she connected online with the students of the Rural School La Sabina (Frula, Huesca) to speak about research and show them the lab. It was lots of fun and the kids have loved to watch us working in the laboratory!

We believe participating in these initiatives is essential to reach gender balance in STEM disciplines in the future, but we cannot forget that support to the scientific career of female researchers is essential to reach that goal… Many of us drop science on the way due to lack of funding and support, as well as the instability associated to this career.

Last Wednesday 24^th was the official first day for Alba Royo-García as laboratory technician in our group. We have known Alba since summer of 2019, when she did her end of degree thesis with us working on the role of the fission inhibitor mDivi-1 on PDAC CSCs. We all enjoyed so much having her in our team, that she decided to stay with us for some more months in 2020/2021 while she enroled a Postgraduate program in Research at the UZ.

We have been extremely lucky to be able to hire her until the end of this year thanks to the Award “Rector Manuel López” (IIS Aragón). To celebrate it, we went for a picnic at the Park José Antonio Labordeta! WELCOME ALBA!!

[ES] El pasado miércoles 24 fue el primer día oficial de Alba Royo García como técnico de laboratorio en muestro grupo. Conocemos a Alba desde el verano de 2019, cuando hizo su tesis de fin de grado en nuestro grupo, trabajando en el papel del inhibidor de la fisión mitocondrial mDivi-1 en las CSCs de cáncer de páncreas. Todos disfrutamos tanto teniéndola en nuestro equipo que decidió continuar con nosotros unos meses más en 2020/2021 mientras se matriculó en un posgrado de investigación en la UZ.

Hemos sido tremendamente afortunados de tener la oportunidad de contratarla hasta finales de este año gracias a la Ayuda “Rector Manuel López” (IIS Aragón). Para celebrarlo… ¡hemos ido a hacer un picnic bajo el sol al parque José Antonio Labordeta! ¡¡BIENVENIDA ALBA!!
